St George's is a private nursery in Tunbridge Wells. The brief was to renovate and enhance their current playground which had fallen into disrepair using features that would support learning and provide places for children to enjoy.
The new playground is now one of St George's best assets - not only is it an area where pre-school children and after-school clubs can tear about letting off steam, it also caters for smaller children and toddlers with an enclosed quiet area keeping them safe from the rough play. Built from the remains of an old playground, the solution included new tarmac, split levels, screened-off play areas and an artificial play-grass lawn.
To support the educational environment, there is a water garden which not only adds a corner of tranquillity and attracts insects and birds but is good for early learning too. Alongside, a piece of rough, derelict ground was also turned into a children picnic area and a garden where classes are rested and shaded on hot days and taught the rudiments of gardening. Children are encouraged to produce their own salad crops which has proven to deliver a very satisfying leaning experience for this age group. Staff too use the garden during mild weather as an alfresco staff rest room. Climbing and play equipment installed on to a new rubber safety surface plus a sand box complete the scheme.
